I would like your opinion on small radios for the river. They don't need to be water proof, but they do need to be small and for the batteries to last the day!!!!. I'm so tired of trying to talk to some one 100 meters away and they couldn't catch me.

Cobra makes a fairly inexpensive set sold pretty much any where. Range is about a mile and as long as you don't turn them up all the way they should last all day. The best way to save battery life is to decide between who ever you are fishing with is to do radio checks either ever half hour or every hour. I prefer every hour. Otherwise fork over,the dough for lithium ion batteries.

We use radios sometimes, and they are good for emergencies, but a pain in the rear when you are trying to sneak up on a fish, and the radio goes off. I have both battery powered radios, and a pair of Motorola radios that have chargers. We keep them in waterproof bags, and although we don't use them often, we use them when we hike into the mountain rivers in the winter, or in the backcountry when we spread out.

I've got at least 3 pairs of FRS/GMRS radios. The Motorolas we have are the best, they're about 6 years old, but work well when we use them. They take three AAA batteries, and last way more than all day- they can go for days without replacing the batteries.
My tip:
Get an earbud with a push-to-talk microphone. You will always be able to hear when some one talks at ya, and you can stash the radio in a pocket.

Everyone thanks. This last trip to the river I had my friend, Wolfie, who is mobily challenged. I gave her a radio in case she need me ASAP, regardless if a fish was on line or not I wanted to respond. At one point I was only 200 yards away, she tried to call, I couldn't hear her. We had done a radio check before I walked around the bend in the river. She was having a problem getting out of the water. This was the first time in many years that I had been able to move from her side during our trips, since I thought the radio would give me a comfort level. I have little faith in this radio thing now, but your comments about line of sight and the type of radio make me feel that I can get more freedom next time she and I fish together.
