Batten down the hatch!!!

Postby fly addict » March 20th, 2011, 10:09 am

I was at the harbor this morning casting, and saw the harbor patrol had had a major storm warning flag flying. They are calling for wind over 48 knots. This is a major storm for the first day of spring. It looks like a good day to light a fire and tie some flies.

It's blowing hard here with a very light rain. The snow level is just above the valley floor, and yes I'm sitting here tieing Pheasant tails & Hares Ears...BobK

It's howling in Camarillo. It was just raining sideways, and the wind sounded like a fighter flying low over the house. Tying more candy corn today.

Blowing 50+ here and knocked down one of the horse shelters that I just rebuilt after the last wind storm. Hadn't had the chance to add cement to the legs before this blow.

Went fishing this morning at Canyon looked nasty but no windy early on. Nice session, nobody fishing, which is extremely unusual for this time of year. Got a bunch of fish, wind came up right when I quit around 12:30. Two o'clock and no rain yet.

Funny the weather is slamming everybody as it usually hits up in this area==Running Springs--first. It just started snowing in the past half hour and the wind hasn't been blowing at all, but our house is on the Santa Ana wind side of the hill and we don't get much wind when it is blowing in from the ocean side of the mountain.

We've received about 1/8 inch of snow so far with temp at 33 degrees, but they're calling for 2+ feet tonight. I'll blow it out before heading back to Idaho on Tuesday. At least there it will be warmer.

I live just feet from the finish line for the LA Marathon. Emergency vehicles on hand for "hypothermal" runners and stands offering product samples with no one approaching them because of the rain. I'm loaded up on trail mix type bars etc. There was even a bandstand and a band trying to play despite the rain under a cursory (read minimal) canopy. I am sure they are a cool band but they were 100% stupid; wrapping towels around their cables to reduce wetness etc. Literally having water pour between them as they tried to do a song. People have DIED doing this. It never really let up to any great degree. Very rough day I am sure for many of the runners. In my insulated get-up all I could think: "but the fishing is going to be amazing this year".

Well said Bernard. Down here though it didn't start raining until six thirty, but as a rule it never rains as much here as the LA/OC.

About of foot of snow at the 5900' level. Waiting for the plow to come by so I can get to work.

Wind blew down two horse shelters that have stood for 8 years and gave us 12 inches of new, wet snow at 4,500'. I am hoping for warm Santa Anas......

Weird weird weather. Had some hail here in OC this morning. Won't be fishing anywhere for a while. I live close to the beach maybe I'll try fishing the ocean. Never have fly fished the ocean. Oh wait that means bigger stuff. Bigger rod and reel bigger line, leader etc. Maybe next year. I could start tying salt water flies. But all in all I love the rain and most of the reservoirs and lakes are full or at least more water than they have had in a long time.
