Creek rod recommendations

Postby John Harper » April 14th, 2011, 11:31 am

Friends,

Due to an unfortunate error (high sticking  ), I am in the market for a new creek rod. I'd initially prefer something 7'6" and maybe a 3/4 weight. I've always liked a 2 piece (I remember metal ferrules), but maybe 4 piece would be more compact for packing, although I usually just carry the two piece in it's sock with reel attached when hiking. I've never broken a rod hiking, backpacking, or closing a car door, only when trying to dislodge a stuck nymph.

My old rod was a cheapy that is not warranted (Redington Crosswater), and was just a utility piece. I'd appreciate any recommendations. Not sure I'm ready for the 0 weight crowd, but you can try and convince me. Budget, maybe $100 to $200, tops.

I also have no problem with a used rod previously owned by a little old lady who never fished much. :D

TFO Lefty Kreh Pro Series 7'6" 3wt. It's a 4 piece for $149.00. Has been my go to rod over the last year. And a lifetime warranty for those unfortunate incidents.

I second Wandering Blues with the TFO. Can't go wrong with any of their models.

Personally, I'm still crying over a Grey's G-series 7' 6" 3wt, 3 piece that met its untimely death in the automatic window of my truck. The rod has since been discontinued but you can find one on Ebay and such for about $100. In its short-lived life, I enjoyed it about as much as any that I've owned. Another good one is the Echo Carbon in the same weight, length, etc. I own one and it is an attractive, bomb proof rod.

My two cents. Get ready for the :deadhorse:

I second this rod. I also have one and don't give it enough credit.

I have built two 2wts that I use pretty much exclusively in local creeks, both 6'6", I use the 4pc most of the time because it packs in a small back pack, both cost me about $100-120, makes a 7" trout a lot more fun.

John, I have 1, 2, and 3wts in lengths from 6 to 7.5' they are all excellent small creek rods for dries and wets, you know the kind of wets I am talking about. I will not drop brandnames, but I have high end, and, some lower end, well they are not cheapos, but they were not expensive, and they have warranty's. Believe it or not, my favorite 2wt, cost 100.00.

Email me if you are interested in trying any of them out.

I do not use it at all so it just is sitting collecting dust.

Hey John, you can't go wrong with a t.f.o 4 pc 3wt or 4 wt what ever your chose. Although they mostly come in 9ft length I have seen some 7'6 ft as well, at select Sport Chalet's retailing for about 149$ with warranty card and sock.I would just call Sport Chalet nearby if they don't have it they can search a inventory database to locate which location has it and send it down to the location nearest to you no charge. :)

Although out of your price range, I tried the Scott's 774/3 F2 two weekends ago at Leland's Expo. It's a fiberglass 7' 7" 4-weight. It's a fantastic rod that can do it all, and with grace. It's action allows you to throw roll casts that you can only dream about with a graphite rod that short. It cast far in the wind, and lands with a whisper.
