It's light enough that it makes the small trout fun but has enough backbone to cast 30-40ft (if you happen to find a casting lane) and land big trout (biggest so far on it was an 18" cutt from Grand Tetons NP). Before dropping the big bucks on this small rod, I used a TFO Series 1 7'6" 3wt that cost me $89. This rod is still in my quiver but it doesn't see much use anymore.

Ditto on the 00 for local streams - it's the only one I use south of the Kern.
I have a retirement plan - I plan on going fishing.

I'm with Dr. Creek and was fearful of chiming-in to this discussion LOL but Dean you brought me out. I use this trick all the time. Honestly, as for rod choice, I feel it varies from spot to spot. Oh here's a spot where I can cast, oh here's a spot where I dap, oh here's a spot for the ol' bow-n-arrow, here I can roll cast .. and on and on and on .... Mark's suggestion is great: Try rods out. IMHO, just fish what you enjoy fishing.

The manufacturers hate me.
