Battenkill mid-arbor size Vs are on clearance for $109 at Orvis.com, Pasadena can usually match it. Also Pasadena had the Battenkill large arbors on sale a few weeks ago, maybe they still are. Supposed to have a good drag, but I have never had a fish get to the backing on mine, so I don't know.

The reel that I use for Carp and Cuts, that has a decent enough drag for those species is the Pflueger Trion or one of the discontinued Echo reels. You can find either on Ebay for about $80 No, I wouldnt use them for Tuna, Bones or other drag screamers, but for fresh water or the surf No problems. I did catch a couple of small bones with the Echo. BobK

When I look at 8-10wt reels, I'm looking for something with a substantial, quality drag. If that's not a big issue for you, there should be quite a few options. I like the Battenkill Mid Arbors, and the Pflueger mentioned is a good reel. The now discontinued Redington GD and CD reels are nice. Allen reels have been discussed here. Lots of Chinese reels on ebay, but I don't have any experience with those particular models. Some folks swear by Okuma reels, but I don't cared for the 2 I have.

How are you going to use the 10wt? How often are you going to fish it? I've seen less expensive reels in that weight range blow up under pressure from good fish and you don't want that to happen, believe me. You have to factor in usage, weight of the reel, durability and drag.

I am a huge fan of Waterworks Lamson and Konic 4 is $150.00 but yet has the same drag as the Litespeed up to an 8wt.

Needs to have a good drag and will be used for the surf, Salmon, steelhead and big cutts.

Palnning to build a 10'6 8wt switch rod for this reel.

The LA Battenkills are on "sale" at the moment. I have a VI on my spey that did quite nice with Chinook and large bulls last year........... I am sure the smaller size (V) would be ok for what you want (for the price).....

The older Orvis Battenkill Mid Arbor has been discontinued and has the same drag as the Large Arbor. It is a mid arbor and heavy. But in a 10 wt. rod, you want a beefier reel to balance it.

You mean they are getting rid of the regular and Bar Stock Battenkills too? That would be a shame. By the way, Orvis needs to update their website. To see the new Hydros reel, I had to go to a fly shop's website. Couldn't find it on orvis.com? Nice looking reel!
