CARIBBEAN FISHING OUTFITS - NEED ADVICE FOR PURCHASE

Postby SaltyFresh » June 3rd, 2011, 10:07 am

Hello Guys,

I will be going on my honeymoon in the Caribbean later this year, and plan on doing some flyfishing.

I need advice on a new setup.

I want to purchase a new outfit that I can use for this trip.
I plan on fishing inshore only. I have no clue what I am in for. I have never been there..

I'm thinking about buying the Redington RS4 outfit for 329.95.

I currently have a Sage 6wt & Battenkill Mid Arbor IV.

Any tips/advice on what 2 outfits I should bring with me?

Thanks in Advance!

Everyone here will have their own opinion. My preference if I could only take 2 set- ups would be a 10wt/ 8 wt. I spent $3K on gear when I went on my honeymoon to Belize. If I did it again, I would spend all I could afford on a high end rig that you would use after the honeymoon is over (8 wt.) and borrow/ rent any other gear that you need soley for this trip. One of the best tools you'll have is some high quality shades as you can't cast to them if you can's see them. And don't forget about your feet.

Greg sounds like a great place for a honeymoon.
Do you know exactly what area you are going to?
A little research will go a long way in knowing what to bring and will save you some money.

If your going to be fishing the flats the eight to ten weight suggested by Rubikinda is also what I would suggest.
If you throw Tarpon into the mix then I would bump it up to a 12 weight.

I have a TFO 10wt pro your more then welcome to borrow for the trip.

Make sure if you purchase the Reddington you get the 4 piece for travel and not the 2 piece model.

Besides the gear the best advice I can give is to figure out exactly where your going and what your target fish / conditions will be.
Once you know the what and how you will know what fly lines, flies and ect to bring.

Then you will know what lines you should start practicing with before you go. ;)

I only say this because if you end up flats fishing you will need to use a floating line and if your only use to throwing shooting heads your going to be in a whirl of trouble trying to make the adjustment standing on the flat.

I also realize this is a honeymoon not a fishing trip so if it's just going to be take it as it comes then that's cool too. jon

Honeymoon when the lights go out, fishing trip when the sun is out...... unless you do a tarpon trip that starts around midnight. Don't worry, she'll understand. Besides, she'll have the rest of your life to dictate when you can or can't go fishing. :o

Thanx all, very very helpful.

We havn't booked our free cruise yet, but we are leaning towards the "st. / saint islands"... We attended a timeshare presentation for the free cruise gift. Im sure yall know what im talking about. When we do book, i will post again for sure.

I've been stuck in the fly fishing vortex... It has consumed my life the past few months... God must have had a part in me breaking my sage 6 wt while taking it apart because my priorties have been forgotten. I have 3 more weeks to go before my rod is replaced and in my hands, until then i will have time to do more important things.... But when i get my rod back... Its on like donky kong!!!!!!!!!
