Just wanted to share an email that I got out of the blue from angie@thefishingoddess.com. This was not solicited; She wrote me this:

Howdy, I fly fish for super large salmon, trout, cutbows, 15 pound plus winter run steelhead, etc... Some fly fisher wants to book a trip with me and I looked at your web site... I got a good chuckle and felt embarrassment for you and your writers... Dude, NEVER EVER take a picture of a fish you caught on a fly that is smaller than your hand. I know most fly fishers that write about it aren't very experienced, otherwise they wouldn't romanticize so much about it. But pictures of what I consider bait when I go tuna fishing 100 miles out in the ocean, makes a mockery of your web site. Get some fly fishers that can fish and have some NORMAL size trout, you know instead of being four inches more like 24...

To that "one upper," the albacore off the coast of the PNW can hardly be called "tuna." When you want to come down and throw at some REAL tuna, than you can make claims to fish that actually pull. A 30# albie that dead drags back to the boat on 15# test is by no means a challenging battle or a trophy fish.

Oh no, not steelhead and salmon! 15 POUNDS! Wow, that is "super large" indeed! What do you need, an 8 wt and 15# tippet? Geeeez. Give me a break, if you're going to puff chests over trophy fish, anything under triple digits doesn't even make the first cut. The fish SHE catches are used for bait to catch THOSE fish. So spare me...

Your response was great, Craig. I can't imagine what would have provoked her Napoleon complex fueled email.

Each type of fishing has its own draws and is fun in its own way. Anytime someone wants to laugh at my trout photos, I can share my offshore photos if it makes them happier. Like you said, to each his own.

Granted being a woman guide in a boys club I guarantee she has put up with lot of crap from male anglers.
Unfortunately by growing a thicker skin and learning to deal with A-holes she has become the thing she once hated.

Fisherman will always find some topic to defend their insecurities. In fact most people living within our culture need to use some sort of defense to protect themselves from feeling inferior.

It goes well beyond what Albiemanmike is refering to, although his point coincides with this statement. Spin fisherman defend themselves against fly fisherman, baitcasters defend themselves against spin fisherman, boat fisherman defend themselves against shore fisherman, shore fisherman defend themselves against boat fisherman, catch and release fisherman defend themselves against harvesting fisherman.......and on and on.

Look at Racism. Look at class structure. Look at religion. It's all the same....all an offensive defense. Its all about insecurity. Its all about protecting ourselves against our own feelings of unworthiness. Its much easier to criticize or condemn rather than look within for our real intention to critisize. If we look at that true intention, or in other words our true reason for the need to critisize, it will lead us all to what is really bothering us. And that is usually the root of where this all comes from.

This same kind of contraversy is going on on the Atlantic Salmon forum that I frequent with arguements and finger pointing about catch and release versus the kill. It happens on the offshore forums where one guy defends what he does by critisizing the other guy. Trolling versus chunking, targeting school BFTs versus Giants, dacron versus mono, and on and on. And the bickerings are all paper thin.....just like this one. No one needs to defend what they do. And for the same token, no one needs to attack or critisize others for what they do. Even the thought must be errased. It's all down to insecurity and thus comes the offensive defense.

Live and let live. It will each of us and ourselves justice. It will be very healing. I 'try" my best to live these thoughts constantly. I do get the urge to critisize and judge because I too have been brought up in this culture. But the first step is to be honest and aware of the intention.....and that will help get all of us back to the enjoyment.

Don't tell someone to throw the fish back if they want it. It's their fish. Don't tell them its better on fly than the plug. It's their experience. Don't take any of their joy away from anyone for your sake. Any judgement you exhibit either said or unsaid is a "true" reflection of the judge himself.

Angie, I took a look at your site a few day's ago and my first thought was WOW , either this gal has a great sense of humor and is poking fun at herself a little or she is really full of herself is a bit of a jack-ass. I don't know you and from your post I suspect it is the latter. It takes some real talent to insult so many people in one shot -- good job ! I've lived 54 years and fished 50 of them w/o ever hearing of you and i'm pretty o.k with that. The good thing about getting older is that you forget quickly-- Have a nice life .

Spent eight years in the PNW chasing trout...... alone and in beautiful solitude.

A lot of people have big fish mentality in the PNW but she adds smug * to the formula. She acts like we complete control where we live or are born. When in Rome fish like the Romans to speak. We're capitalizing on what we have in our backyards. Now many of us plan on avoiding hers. But she won't care since she's too full of herself.

I was just going to say, I would prefer April.

Here is the thing it is not that April is prettier, though IMO she is. This is about a demeanor they project in their images. April actually seems like she would be more pleasant to spend the day with. There is certainly no questioning the passion she has for the sport.

I have been thinking for a while that in some ways a female guide would be easier. Less ego in the way. I know that is generalizing, but men are generally more competitive with each other and we are always striving for that alpha male thing. With a woman that would not be present in the relationship. In fact around women I try to put my best self forward, so I probably would be more receptive to trying new things and taking direction.

To be fair, I have only hired 2 guides in my life, both men and both provided an excellent day on the water.

I make it a point to never catch trout longer than my Johnson. That's why I was so happy about the TXL 1wt. Then again, maybe the 000 would have been a better choice.

I just don't get it. What would posess somebody to send an e-mail like that? Especially a business person looking to draw in clients. I know in custom rod building your reputation and word of mouth can make or break you. Guess that doesn't fly for guides ? Not sure what her target client group is, but it sure doesn't include me.

Wonder if talking down to potential clients would get me more rod orders. Sort of a reverse psychology approach.
