Fishing with Bill (Beachbum)

Postby fflutterffly » July 6th, 2011, 10:18 am

To say I had a good time this morning would be simple untrue. I'd like to say that the morning was all I could ask for. I arrived at the pre designated spot at 5:30, rigged and took of for the water. As I worked my way up south the breaks were soft and the troughs long and shallow. Perfect for corbina and guitar shark. At my feet beds of crabs dominated the sand. Bill showed and and than the fun began. Here's the short tale: He hooked into many, we saw about 5 (shovelnose and a few leopard) and I stepped on one halibut. I watched bill fight a nice fish for about 5 min and then it broke off. Once the line was brought in he showed me the end. Chewed! Maybe a leopard. But what made this zip-skunk so great was how much I learned. Flies, reading the water, spots to fish.... How can this be a bad day????? I'll tell you what's so nice. We all belong to this board, we all fish and share information to the betterment of the forum.

Bill thanks for the start of a wonderful day.

I'd love to try my hand at surf fishing, but I'm not sure my heaviest stick at 5wt could handle it. Thanks for an intriguing report.

Ariel, thanks for the company! It was a beautiful Morning in SMO. It's been a while since I saw that many shovelnose and corbina on the crab beds, which were about as thick as they get. When I stood on them barefoot, they felt like a foot massager. The water temp is finally warm enough to get things going, and felt good wading.

Curtis, anytime you want to come down, let me know. The 5 will work for everthing but sharks, and I have extra rods if they show up. I did hook into one today, only to have it chew the leader.
Set the hook!

Fishing with Bill is always fun, even if you don't catch anything.

Sounds like fun, Ariel. If only the ocean were closer. :(

I always enjoy fishing with Bill, one of the most laid back guys out there... I gotta get back out again on the surf.
