New wooden hinged box

Postby RSetina » July 20th, 2011, 10:30 pm

I'm just about finished with my second wooden hinged fly box design. This one has a foam insert which is nothing new but the wooden hinge really makes it something unique. I have special plans for this one. Something I've needed to do for a while. I just didn't know exact what. Now I know.

That is a sharp looking box. That hinge got me thinking.

Nice, Rick!! Another good feature of wooden fly boxes is they float.

That's some work Rick! Wooden hinges are difficult to make. You are very skilled.

World class! Reminds of a Maloof piece. I am baffled on how one makes wooden hinges that are round like that and whether you are using a wooden pin to hold it together.

I am allowed to cut, split and stack fire wood but that is the extent of my wood working ability.

  LOL!

Rick, very nice. Is that Cherry? More pics, more pics!

I think I see some rare earth mags there too huh? Wooden or metal dowel? I wanna see the end view and the hinge side. We should get together. I have some exotic woods that'll blow ur mind!

Very nice. Any wooden hinge is a lot of work. and don't get me started on drilling that long of a hole straight! Nice work!

Thanks for the compliments everyone. I enjoy making them. Greg, the hinges are not hard to make, just time consuming. After planning down the the wood to make the blank there are five steps to get to the finished hinge and then more sanding to remove the milling marks. I use a 1/8 inch brass rod for the hinge pin. So far I have 5 different box jigs, two of which are made to accept the C & F inserts. I just received 4 C & F clips yesterday and will need to modify the jigs slightly so the clip can be inserted into the bottom of the box. Then the user can insert any of the two smaller C&F inserts into the box that they prefer. If you have flies you like for a certain water you can insert a set of flies and change back latter to another set of flies for another water. One box, several inserts, but in a wooden hinged box.
