My Latest Custom Wood Fishing Net

Postby Fishfreak911 » July 31st, 2011, 12:42 am

It has been a while since I posted a net. I have been very busy in the shop making one commission after another. This is the latest net that left me today. LOL! I talk abou it like a child leaving the nest! :comfort:
I just received another new commission today for a pontoon boat net. I am very blessed to be able to do what I love to do.

Some of you may know Kirk Deeter, a fly fishing blogger for Field & Stream’s, Fly Talk. He was the guest speaker at my FF club a month or so ago. We were talking before the meeting and he asked me what I did for a living. When I said I make custom nets, he immediately replied, “I’ll buy one!” This was sight unseen too. I happened to have a few nets with me, so he looked at them, and placed an order.
I made a longer handled net as he requested. The thing came out so nice, that I wanted one for myself. I don’t normally copy a net exactly, but this one was an exception to the rule. Besides, the burl grain would ensure that they were not EXACTLY alike.

So I almost completed the second net for me when I receive an email asking for a longer handled net. This client somehow got my card at the FF Film Tour in LBC. He bought it.

He wanted me to make a copper inlay of a royal wulff fly on the handle after seeing how I filled some of the open burl eyes with copper. Here is the final result. He was mightily pleased with the result. He’s leaving tomorrow for an open ended tube trip on Panguitch Res. In Utah.

The handle is Cat’s Paw burl Maple, so called for its seemingly randomly placed clusters of burl eyes resembling the paw prints of a cat. The hoop is a very hard wood called Wenge. Both colors are natural.
As always, the net was finished with a very nice hand rubbed oil composition. He also wanted a stretch lanyard and a magnetic catch which I happily provided to him as well.

I was sad to see it go, but business is business, and there can always be another exception to the rule!

Please enjoy the pics

Greg as I've said before...these are truly works of art. The owner of this net will be blessed with beautiful fish to contrast the nets craftmanship.

One word to describe that net would be stunning. You are a true Artisan, Bravo.

I feel your pain, but its a good bet that your nets go to good homes. ;) Do you mind if I post your link on my web site, under Favorite Links?

Outstanding nets Greg. I remember the net you brought to the film tour and I was very impressed. The wenge and maple look very nice together. I'd be curious to know what oil or mix of oils you use on them if it's not a secret. I use tung oil on the boxes I make and have wondered if there's something better but if it's a secret formula I don't want to know.

Greg,

Absolutely beautiful work. No doubt your customers will be ecstatic.

On a side note, Greg crafted this beautiful net for me and I absolutely love it. I did a short little review on it, but words don't really do these nets justice...

Thank you for all the nice comments gents. Pete, PLEASE link me, and I will do the same for you. RSetina, the mix is a crazy mix of lots of ingredients and even more work as there are a minimum of 3 coats of three different recipes hand rubbed onto the nets. Lots of oils, wax, and varnish. I'll shoot you a pm to keep any lurkers at bay.
