Hardy has come out with a new series of "Ultralight" reels. In keeping with their more contemporary styling, these little reels are hotties.

You need to fish some larger "creeks" and air out 40' or so. Or maybe try using your spl with a triple nymph rig with some lead under an indicator

And we will get down right to the meat of the LA issue. LA reels weigh a whole bunch more than a similar sized regular arbor reel. So I really wonder why all you UL guys do it? Not that I'm a UL guy, my smallest rig is a 2 wt!

I dunno; My Galvans (OB-1) seem to balance quite nicely on the SPLs or the SLT. Actually it worked nicely on the TXL (when I had one)......

What's funny to me is - and I'm only speaking for myself here... I'm still not seeing the entire true "need" for a large arbor reel on an ultralight rod (and if I'm not mistaking, that reel is listed as an ULTRA LARGE arbor? What? How big is ULTRA LARGE and what is it?). The most hard line I ever throw out is maybe twelve feet on my 0wt - fifteen max. Even then, most anything I throw over ten feet (on a creek) is a mess due to the multitude of currents that are bending it in every direction - unless I'm high-sticking. So, three turns of the wheel and its all back on the spool?

2 reasons:

1. Less line coil

2. Less backing needed to fill spool... on my regular arbor, I use foam tape to fill up some of the backing - rather than put all that heavy backing on there.

I think its the same thing with the car rims nowadays...All Rim and no rubber.

Its that bling factor.

Hardy Ultralight 1000: 3.6 oz

Sage Click 1: 2.25 oz

Nautilus FWX 1: 3.5 oz

SA reels.

Orvis BBS1: 3.2 oz

CFO 1: 3.6 oz

Hardy Flyweight: 2.75 oz

Some companies have dropped their standard arbor reels.

Personally, I don't care what size the arbor is, until I have to wind all the loose line in. If my rods are older graphite, glass or bamboo, I will typically match it with a SA reels. If it's a newer hot rod, I go LA.

Why not use a smaller reel (that also weighs less, BTW)!!!!!

That's because they don't sell like the new trendy LA's!!!

That's a huge advantage with LA reels and all my SW stuff is LA. However, I don't recall ever seeing my backing on my 2 WT!!!!

It's all about the proper accessorizing. You wouldn't go to the opera wearing bermudas, and you wouldn't put a Loop Opti on a bamboo.....or would you?







Choices are great. BTW, credit to my daughter who had fun setting up the reels.

Nice bling! BTW, I finally met a gear 'ho bigger than me!!!!
And yes, I use Orvis CFO's on my small stuff, including my 'boo rods. Don't tell me you're surprised by that!

Galvan had a somewhat recent design that looked like it belonged on an '81 Buick Regal.

Would that be the Spoke?
