Doc I've been chumming for years. I habitually throw dry flies onto the water and into the trees in the hope that a trout will take it. I've also been known to throw a loaded fly case full of dry flies into the water only to watch it float away. I never thought to use the slingshot though. I wonder how far I can throw a fly with one. Maybe another addict has tried and can tell me of the result.

Using a slingshot (catapult) for chumming with maggots (in assorted colors) is the norm in England. In river fishing competitions individuals are assigned a section of river bank. One can go down the evening before to chum with hopes of lots of fish still hanging around for the competition. No fish are released but instead are put in a large expandable net for a final weigh in. Fishermen relate that any fish released would swim back and warn their buddies to be wary of the bait. Rods used are similar to Tenkara rods with super sensitive floats (bobbers).
Be thankful for all our public waters and access here in the US. In England one either pays for a day's access if available or pays for a membership to fish in a club's private waters.

I guess it gets to the point of fishing for sport vs. taking a finned "Betsy the cow" trout to the dinner table.

I am not trying to put down this style of fishing because I do see value in getting kids, families to the great great outdoors instead of sitting in front of the boob tube or Xbox. It's just not for me I guess. If I really wanted to catch fish for dinner, I would rather go to Costco.
