Horse Hair Leaders

I received a kit today for making horse hair leaders. I was surprised it came so fast from New York. Chris has great service. I'll get started on a leader this weekend! How exciting! I make my own flies, I've built a rod, and now I'm going to make a horse hair leader. How cool is that? Only $15 for enough to make 3 leaders.

I just thought of an idea, if we can get women to start wearing horse hair instead of hackle in their hair, the price of hackle will fall and horse hair prices will soar. But Rick won’t be able to afford to tie his horse hair leaders anymore.

Thanks for all the comments that made me LMAO. Luc, it depends on how many strands you use in the last snood. Chris acctually made a leader with a single hair for the tip of one of his leaders. It's very delicate but you can catch fish with a single hair on the end. A snood is a section of twisted horsehair. Six snoods are needed to make up an 11' leader for the Tenkara rod in this case. I saw Chris' HH leader years ago in San Francisco and I was impressed with it's the look and feel and a couple of guys on the Tenkara site have made some recently and love how they turn over, so I decided to give making them a try. Remember how it felt to catch a fish on a fly you tied? HH leaders where used for centuries and to make one, catch a fish using one is to me in the same realm. When I get it done I'll post a photo.

I forgot to post how the leader worked on the Kern last week. It casts really well, turns over nicely and didn't break on any of the fish I caught. I got snagged on the bottom a couple of times and even with having to give it a fairly good tung to retrieve the fly, it didn't break. The smallest snood was 4 strands.

I made a three strand snood in camp and Jim pressured it until it broke. I'm not sure how much of a pull he gave it but for most of the fishing I do a horse hair line would be perfect.
