Greys Streamflex?

Postby Dry Fly Rie » January 21st, 2012, 4:16 pm

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the Greys Streamflex series rods? Not the new XF2 line, but the original Streamflex rods that were discontinued in 2010. I have a chance to get my hands on one, and I don't know much about them. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I've got a 10' 3wt, great nymphing rod I use it for indi and euro styles. Was pretty unhappy with overhead casting with it until I uplined it to 4wt line. Casts much better, not great but definitely usable if you end up in the middle of a hatch with just one rod. Which model are you looking at?

I've a 10' 4wt. Love it for nymphing, does ok with dries. Not the most accurate dry fly rod, but can turn over long slack line leaders of at least the 15 foot length to 30-40 foot distances.

I wish I'd had more opportunity to fish in the two years I've had it though.
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

Thanks for the opinions, Ryan and Darrin. I'm looking at the 9 foot 3 weight. I've used an 8 foot 4 weight for most of my life, and I'd like to give a longer rod a chance. Also, I've made it my goal to actually try nymph fishing this year, so the extra foot would obviously help.

Thanks.

I have both the 3wt and the 5wt. Use the 3wt for indie & euro nymphing mainly. It' handles both the 3wt and 4wt lines equally well. Picked it up for $219 two years ago. Extremely happy with it. Bends deep into the butt when handling some of the large browns from the EW. Haven't fished the 5wt yet, bought it off my Uncle for cheap so he could get a Sage one. THe 10' 5wt would be a good tube or boat rod for Crowley/Bridgeport.
