Benny’s Custom Fly Fishing Net –Curly Claro Walnut, Mahogany & Wenge

Alright Benny S. Here she is-Happy Birthday!
This net handle was made from the same piece of curly Claro Walnut that Fly Addicts was made from. As a matter of fact, I nested it right next to the open space where Fly Addicts came from. All of the writing on the net is engraved and inlaid with brass. The hoop is mahogany surrounded by beautiful, and hard, Wenge.
I will be showing it in the Sierra Nets booth at the Fly Fishing Show in Pleasanton on Feb. 24-26th. It’s simply too nice not to! Much thanks to Benny for allowing me to keep it through the show.
Enjoy!
Note where marks net was cut out to the left and in the north/south position from yours.

The finished product! This handle has some stunning figuring!

This is the back of the handle. It had a small inclusion in the center which I also filled with brass.

You have to see it in the sunlight to really appreciate its “movement.”

Hope you guys liked seeing the process pics.

Beautiful work as always, Greg!
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

This thing is ridiculous man! One of the highlights of the fly fishing film tour for me for sure!

Greg, absolutely beautiful. Man, that has got to be some serious pucker factor when the net is almost complete and now you have to engrave the initials on the top. Looking good, and good luck at the show.

LOL! You ain't kiddin'! Pucker factor is a 12.2 on a 1-10 scale! It's getting easier as I gain more and more experience, but yeah, so easy to * up a lot of hard work on the engraving. Been there, done that. Not to mention that Wenge is a real PIA to carve because it's a series of hard and soft grain. You push the router bit to get through the hard part and suddenly it shoots thru and in a different direction in the soft part. Pretty frustrating at times.
