LucFish's New Custom Net in Progress

Postby Fishfreak911 » March 15th, 2012, 10:00 am

Here is LucFish's net made from instrument grade curly Claro Walnut and Curly Maple

Planing off the excess strip width after coming out of the glue-up form after 24 hrs.

More rough planing with the trusty ol' Stanley.

Finish planing with the ultra-smooth precision of my beloved Lee Nielsen

The first dry fit of the Measure Net Luc rquested.

Band sawing off the excess handle width marks the beginning of the handle shaping phase. All of this is done with rasps and files until it feels gooooood.

Hand shaping the handle using a Japanese rasp.

The net was sprayed with denatured alcohol for the photo. Much sanding and some shaping is still required.

I hope you enjoy these pics of the steps.

Greg-

AWESOME looking woodwork! Nothing better than a pile of shavings from a hand-plane!

I'm bummed I couldn't make the Pleasanton show to meet you in person - maybe next time. Great looking work - thanks for sharing the pics!

You do nice work and I think that I speak for a lot of us.

Everytime you post pictures of a build we all get a little closer to placing an order. :grouphug:

Pull the trigger, you won't regret it. One of the reasons I got the net was because you only need one net (trout fishing) I know this net will last a lifetime and made how I want a net, not somebody elses idea of how the net should look like. We went through every aspect of shape, length, size, netting material, and custom personal features that make this net my own. These nets are functional yet works of art. Do they cost more? Sure, you get any custom made product and it's going to cost more, but it's not like reels or other costly items related to flyfishing in that you only need the one. In the overall scheme of things there not that much, I've spent many more dollars on one trip to the flyshop for flies and tippet material. And in this case I'm helping out a fellow businessman with a product made right here in the good old USA. If that sounds corny and a little old fashion so be it. As long as I can afford it, I will buy domestic even if it's a few bucks more.
