Watershed Stewards Project- fisheries jobs

Postby Trootfisher » April 12th, 2012, 10:28 pm

Howdy folks,

The Americorps Watershed Stewards Project is now accepting applications. If you know someone who is graduating college this year and looking for a great work opportunity in a program whose mission is "to conserve, restore and enhance anadromous watersheds for future generations by linking education with high-quality scientific practices" then I highly recommend checking this out.

http://www.ccc.ca.gov/work/programs/Ame ... /wsp1.aspx

I completed two (10 month ea) terms in this program and spent a lot of time walking miles of streams surveying for spawning salmonids, performing habitat typing surveys, designing and implementing salmonid habitat restoration projects and performing community outreach to educate schoolchildren and the public on the importance of healthy watersheds. It's an amazing experience and, although it's low paying, it's highly competitive to get into due to the invaluable experience.

A lot of the graduates of this program have gone on to lucrative jobs with govt agencies (DFG, USFS, etc), non-profit fisheries and restoration groups, and private consulting firms specializing in geomorphology, hydrology, and biological sciences.

Thanks for posting that up. Surely we have someone, or a friend of someone, who can make a run at that.

I'll look into it. Sounds interesting, though I can't see moving and paying rent somewhere with that pay. Thanks for the link

The pay was tough for 2 years, but well worth it in the long run. The program has historically attracted a lot of people from the midwest and east coast who move out to California for 2 solid years of fisheries work experience after college. Even with the low pay, It's very competitive to get into this program.
