Making a stripping basket

Postby Papasequoia » April 17th, 2012, 8:18 am

This article was featured on Midcurrent today. It looked like a handy DIY to pass on. As an aside, Jon Stanbery had something similar, but the spikes in the bottom looked more substantial than what this guy recommends, so maybe he or someone else who has made one can chime in.

I have a few images of James aka corbinafly, making a stripping basket for about $10 or less. If I recall correctly all the items were picked up a Lowes or Home Depot for less than $10

Super easy to make, and very well within a small budget. This is also perfect for those who will be attending the One Surf Fly Dockweiler Beach Classic April 21st 2012 this Saturday, for those just testing the surf for the first time, you don't spend a fortune on making a stripping basket. Thanks for sharing Jon.

great thread, I made a stripping basket a while back for around $7. very easy to do.

For all the DIYers out there, what is the best material to use for the "spikes" in the bottom?

I had a bunch of those golf ball markers lying around and glued some into the bottom of my basket. They worked fine, but over time the glue fails and they fall out.

I used the zip ties on the bottom for the spikes. No glue so there is no way they will come out. One tip, take a lighter and melt the end of the zip ties in to nice smooth domes. Those jagged edges did a number on my hand before I did that.

AFTER installation use a lighter to round the sharp EDGES and ends of the zip-ties. Just my  $.02

Editted to add: The one in the pictures above has a few BIG holes in the bottom for drainage. More small holes drain the same and let you set a loose fly in the bottom while making changes.
I fish for my sanity. If I catch it, should I still practice catch and release?

I made this with minimal $$$. The basket cost less than ten bucks, and all other material I had laying around:
wading belt
excess webbing from wading belt
aluminum rivets
weed wacker string

I was thinking of epoxing a small magnet somewhere to hold flies, but never got around to it. It's the perfect size for me, I wear it off my left hip.

That looks good, Rey. It will drain fast. Yesterday I took at least a dozen waves that filled my stipping basket, and it's a good thing I drilled so many holes in it.
Set the hook!
