Volcano Party Hors d'oeuvre

Postby WanderingBlues » July 18th, 2012, 5:37 pm

Kyle & I jumped on a 3 day into Mexican waters to restock the fridge on blue fin and yellowtail. I was met at the landing by Dr. Creek. Even though Mike is not a beer man, he brought along a stunning collection of 24oz microbrews for me to sample and enjoy on the trip. It was great to see him, though it was too short a meet up. Mike, I look forward to getting in some stream time now that our schedules coincide!

Kyle and I went with our regular crew. We have been fishing together since Kyle was 10 and now he's taller than all of us. It was pretty fun to pull on 30# fish, but it also reminded me of why I drifted from off shore fishing to small stream fly fishing. Not your peaceful, re-energizing zen experience..... :D More like mayhem.

Still, we had a great time and caught 5 of our 6 fish on the iron up on the bow. For you guys with saltwater backgrounds, the stern was a mess with tangles so we stayed away. Didn't slow us down one bit and anytime you can get a strike on the retrieve, it's all the better.

If you'll notice (Andy), I busted out the legendary pumpkin fishing shirt. Still the best 25 cents ever spent at a garage sale. It apparently works for offshore fishing as well. :bananadance: Seriously! When I changed it out the next day, I was skunked. I went back down to the stateroom and put it back on (stink and all) and I was hooked up on the very next kelp paddy. Powerful mojo at work.

Can't wait for an FFA gathering to share the spoils. PEACE.

How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

Ah....the orange shirt. I've missed seeing it on your posts. I will anticipate that at some point, the or der vas from this trip will become available for consumption?

Yeah man, that oughta keep us busy! I've still got the sesame oil that Tom got and you left your Himalayan Man Essence salt here, so a little bacon, some cilantro and we are ready to go! :bananadance: Andy - I'll send you a PM.

For tonight, I did a marinade of 5 spice, teriyaki, and sesame oil for a tuna tenderloin. Then I seared it medium rare and served it on top of fresh cucumbers with rice vinegar and lime zest, freshly roasted red bell pepper, avocado, and lime juice. A new favorite in the home!
