A Little Advice......

Postby Hillbilly » July 26th, 2012, 8:59 pm

3 friends and I were able to talk our wives into a 4 day guys trip at the end of August. We are planning on driving from Orange County and wanted to do something a little different than a Sierra run (east and west sides) which is our typical go to trip. We all FF about 30 times a year so we aren't rookies but we aren't studs either.

As many of you well know, hall passes from the wives are hard to come by and we want to make the best use of our time/trip. If anyone has any advice on a good 4 dayer they have taken I'd love to hear about it ( feel free to PM me).

We were thinking of going to the Redding area or Southern Utah but we are open to suggestions....any advice would be great

Thanks everyone!!

LOL! I was thinking Redding or Southern Utah as I was reading your post! These are your guys http://www.quietflyfisher.com/ They came to our Club meeting earlier this year. A few of our members invited him because they go there every year and always have a blast. Their rates are way better than most, and the lodging there is inexpensive too. It is so on my list. The waters there are VERY uncrowded.

Reddding is Redding. FISHY, FISHY, FISH-Y. Love it!

Does it have to be driving? A quick flight and a rental car could put you at so many awesome spots. Also, you said something other than the Sierra - is it trout only you are looking for? How about a trip down to Baja? Just a thought.

Late August is not the best time to come all the way up to NorCal for trout. The toughest time time to fish on trout rivers due to low and warm water conditions (except the Lower Sac), and before steel season. Good striper time on some of the local lakes that have them, if you might be into that (but you need a boat or something that floats). I like PapaS' suggestion best, go down to Baja!

Could try the San Juan in new Mexico...a long days drive from OC.
Works better as a 5 day trip but could do 4 in a pinch...
Fish the quality water section with a guide one day and wade the next on your own....is fishing pretty good this summer and late aug is still a decent time there....
I agree with others that NorCal might be tough...but could try the upper sac at dunsmur?
Send Bernard a PM he might know some areas up north or on the west side for you...
Also contact the fly shop in redding. For local reports up there. Www.flyshop.com
Good luck and have fun!!

Taking a flight might not be a bad idea. SLC should be reasonable. I would focus on the great tailwater runs in the west. At least you know that the release will be decent and the water will be cold. Half the fun is the journey and it sounds to be an awesome time with good buddies.

Is it about seclusion or just doing something different? Roadside water you can drive right up to, or something you gotta work for? Running or still? Are you all flyfishing, or is someone in the group a hardware thrower? Too many possibilities to list here. Looks like you have a problem on your hands.

See, that's why it's so easy for most of us to choose the east side - it's close and it's beautiful, and everyone's palate can be satisfied there.

How about the Reno area? The Truckee flows are at 283 below Reno, a playground to wade. Lots of water up there to fish in CA and NV.

Mike James of Quiet Flyfisher is very knowledgeable of the Fish Lake/Boulder Mtn area of Utah. I fished with him three days last year. He got us into splake, tigers, brookies, two species of cutthroat, 'bows and browns. We didn't have time for tiger muskie or the grayling. Fished couple of different waters each day. SunGLow Inn was our base residence. the food in the cafe, there, was reasonable, too. Best of all, we saw no other fishers in the areas we fished. I would highly recommend him.

Thanks for all the insight everyone. We're leaning towards Southern Utah and will definitely connect with the Quiet Flyfisherman Shop/guide service.

I'll be sure to post once we get back!!!

I'll give another thumbs up for Mike James. He's a good guy and there are a lot of different waters to fish in south central Utah. Plus, the scenery of Bryce and Zion is hard to beat.
