Waterproof Snake

Just got home from camping and fishing up near Bridgeport. Saw a few watersnakes cruising around the beaver ponds and managed to get a video of one. Notice how high the snake rides in/above the water. Wish my flies stayed that dry.

That's way cool. I wonder how fast he travels when he sees a larger trout? Which begs the question...would a larger trout take down a smaller snake?

Which begs the question...would a larger trout take down a smaller snake?

My kids were chasing one of those around last summer. Super fast and super buoyant. I wonder what makes them ride so high on the water.

This is just a guess, but I think it's their scale pattern that helps them float on the surface flim. The same reason(according to Scientific Anglers)the Sharkskin flylines float well, a snake would too. BTW, they swim underwater just as well as above. Very fast critters when they are fleeing, or hunting for fish.
