Gear Bag - What do you use?

Postby fshflys » August 29th, 2012, 1:00 pm

Thinking about a gear bag. Currently I use a small duffle with boots, waders, few extra items. Then a bicycle bag (kind that goes on back rack) for reels & related gear, then grab my rods. It's all stored in 1 place so it's easy to grab but I've been thinking of 1 bag that will carry it all. I kind of like this; http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx ... t_id=12297 but it doesn't look like it would hold everything. What do you use?

I stuff everything into one of those big plastic storage bins, including waders and boots. That way, if anything's wet, it doesn't drain in the car.

I use two bags. I have the Orvis safe passage backpack and the WillyJ cosatal pack. Rightr now my Safe Passage has my trout gear waders, boots, jacket and two rods packed in it still from my Reno trip last week (which I will take up to MAmmoth in Sept. for the fly fair). The Willy J Coastal pack has all of my off shore flies and terminal tackle in it plus some spare reels and Suspender life vest. Both bags carry a lot of stuff. Ssince they are back pack; it leaves my hand free to carry other stuff. This was a plus since I carried on my laptop/swag bag and the back pack with 2 rods strapped on as carry on for my Southwest flight.

This is the new one which is a bit smaller than mine since I got mine 5 or 6 years ago.

I thnk they are still about the same size since mine is a few models older.

This bag may be your answer though:

This is my main travel bag to carry everything in one bag for a trip:

Keep all reels and everything smaller in a huge Fishpond bag. Waders, shoes, etc all go in a huge Sea To Summit dry sack. Like Curtis, I will pull out the stuff I'm taking... then place everything in a huge tote - clothes, everything. Much easier to heft one big tote than several smaller bags. My dry sack is a great tool. Take off my wet gear, put it all in the dry sack, don my sheepskin slippers for the ride back to the hotel room or wherever, and dont worry about it until you clean everything that night. Love it.

For flying I use an Orvis Safe Passage, and older model. It has served me well, and when it had an issue, Orvis made it right after years of use. I can't say enough good about their service.

For car fishing I use an Abel wading bag. Like the Orvis, it has a seperate section below for wet boots and waders. It too has survived years of hard use.

I also have a couple Fishpond bags, one of which is made for waders, boots, and gear, that for now I mostly use for clothing when I fly. When the Orvis bag finally gives out, I will use the it. Fishpond makes some great stuff.

That Safe Passage® Rolling Vented Duffle. I just emailed Orvis with a request for a bag just the size of the Bottom portion

For outdoor gear, I buy used duffle bags at the thrift store for $2 or $3. No way I'm spending $150+tax for a bag that carries dirty waders and boots.

Yep.... and the rest of us can now look around the room scratching our heads wondering why we didn't do the same thing. What a great, great idea. I wonder how much money I would have saved over the years if I had just ditched the idea of needing gear bags with famous names and cool logos on them... but it is nice to have internal separaters and pockets for particular items.

If I could afford all Fishpond, I'd do it. I love the vest and guide pack I have. But, I'll save the cash for the stuff that gets used and abused most often (ie boots, line).

I won this bag in a raffle. No way I'd pay for one.

The one I have is super mondo size(no longer made), and you can fit all your stuff in. All fishing gear, winter clothes for a week+, sleeping bag, pillow, grocery bags of food, small children, etc...etc. I quit using it, because it's so heavy and unwieldy to carry. I now use smaller gear bags. One I splurged on years ago, and the rest are cheapies, or freebies. I have a ventilated wader bag I bought from Cabelas for $7.

I also bought a Fish Pond rolling duffel for a trip I took a long while back. The thing is built like a tank........and weighs like one too. With the new, lower weight restrictions, I'll never fly with it again.

Nice!

Re-purposing used stuff is fun. One of those bicycle messenger type bags except smaller has been real handy on surf jaunts. When I am not in fishing mode and traveling, I use it for toiletries and stash the shoulder strap. I got it for $5 at one of those killer REI used gear sales. Similarly, a $5 camelback in a cool khaki canvas has become my fave guiding pack. See: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=442194515825651&set=a.442193275825775.109408.265505296827908&type=3&theater.

My early generation Eddie Bauer oh wait, LL Bean chest pack finally bit the dust due to corrosion. At the end of the day, I think I'd really enjoy a Fishpond type pack. Back to the thrift store angle, I've been carrying camera accessories in a small AARP bag that I found at a thrift shop. It totally rocks. One day a fishing buddy asked how I was an AARP member when I was still working so much.... Yet another item I need to slap a Black Diamond Trout patch over!

It's all a hodge-podge the more I think of it. My current dry bag is made by FCS and is designed for surf expeditions.

Am I confused? Whatevs ;)

For a while, I was just reusing the used paper bags from Trader Joe's to carry my boots and waders. My current $2 nylon duffel bag from the Assistance League store is a serious upgrade. :?

Don't get me wrong. I LOVE technical gear, and I've parted with plenty of $$$ for Patagonia, TNF, Gregory, Marmot, Columbia, Mountain Hardware, Oakley, Burton, DaKine, etc.

I just don't think a bag to carry waders and boots requires cutting edge design, high tech materials, artisan craftsmanship (more likely communist sweatshop), and a price tag that rivals most of my Lamson-Waterworks US-made reels. Anyone who wants to stow their gear in Fishpond, Filson, or Orvis, more power to you. Nothing wrong with splurging for luxury if you want it. When it comes down to it, all my recreational activities are really just luxuries.

If I want to put everything in one place, plastic storage bins are great as Curtis mentioned. That's my typical method for hauling car camping gear. But, the large plastic bins are not an option when traveling with multiple friends in smaller vehicles.

For airline travel, I buy decent quality rolling luggage at the discount stores... Ross, Marshalls, or TJ Maxx.

i also use a plastic bin - a small one. It holds my waders, vest, wading jacket, wading socks, reels, etc. (everything I need on the water). I also bring along a waterproof moving bag - it is made out of tarp material. I use it to hold my wet stuff after getting out of the water. I also use it to step on while taking off my waders. It has served me well.

$0.59 can't go wrong
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/17228340/

mine is sorta like that but a tad bigger and zips up. My grandma had a bunch at the house. So I took some. I gave a few away. I'll have to ask her again where she got em. I can't recall. Anyhow, it is a cheap solution to hold waders and boots.

I love the ikea idea. Cheap and simple. My gear bag is a large plastic stow box from target. They type you carry your laundry in. This is only used when I travel by car. When traveling by plane I use a army surplus bag. It's long enough for my rod tubes and if it survived the military it will survive me.
