Repairing broken integrated running line?

Postby anacrime » October 10th, 2012, 3:23 pm

I use one of those Rio shooting heads with an integrated running line, I forget the exact model. Some mussels sawed the running line in two and I was wondering if anyone had any experience repairing a broken running line. I found a few articles that show how to repair broken fly lines, but the material is different on a running line and not sure if it would still work.

Also, I actually kind of hate the running line itself. I was thinking about salvaging the shooting head and attaching it to some other running line. Thoughts/suggestions?

Thanks fellers.

I have fixed a couple running lines with this method:

If you don't like the running line, I would just cut the head off, and start over. Most running lines come "looped" so all you have to do is add a loop to the back of the head. By far, my favorite running line is Airflo's Ridge Running line. I have both the intermediate, and floating versions. VERY user friendly, but I have had some durability issues at the factory loop. The coating will separate from the core. Still, if I can get a year of striper fishing(extremely heavy use) out of one line, I'm happy. I've also cut a damaged loop off, and replaced it with my own.

If you need any braided mono for a repair, or loop, let me know.

$40 for running line these days? Yikes. I paid over $100 for this line only a few months ago, so I guess I'll try to repair it.

Thanks for the link. So you threaded both ends of the broken running line into the braided mono, then secured it with two nail knots over the braided mono? Just trying to clarify.

I don't have any braided mono, where's the best place to get it? If you have extra just lying around I could pay ya for it.

Thanks again

Shane

This maybe a long shot, but lots of shops that support steelhead fishing up north have an Airflo "welding" setup used to create loops or join lines. The line can probably be welded using shrink wrap. I don't know if they perform the service, but it might be worth a call. I'd start with Kiene's in SMF.

Yes. You "inch worm" the running line into the braided mono. Try to butt each end flush. Run your fingers over the braid, to stretch it, and make it snug over the line. You are trying to create a Chinese finger trap effect of the braid on the line. Then put a nail knot over each end of the braid. I use mono when stealth is needed, but spectra braid/gel spun will make a smaller, smoother transition. Aquaseal is my #1 favorite thing to use over the knot, but there are plenty of others things you can use. Goop is good if you can find a thinner for it. The tube of Goop does not get hard after opening like Aquaseal.

PM me your shipping address info.
