Czech nymphing leader lengths

Postby fish-on-bro » November 13th, 2012, 7:00 pm

Was wondering what the length of czech leaders should be for a 9' and 10' rod. Is there a rule of thumb to go by.

Regardless of rod length, I've always made them approx. the same length as the rod I am using. Maybe a foot or so longer. I do seem to recall having read that people are using longer leaders lately though.
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

I'm trying something new, I'll start with a 48' tapered leader. Cut some of the tip, cut some off the butt and hope to end up with about a 25' leader before tippet. I'll be able to short and long line direct contact nymph with it. Stay tuned. But If i was just doing a short line it would be between 2/3 to 3/4 the lenght of my rod. But it limits you to just being able to fish below the rod tip.

I tie my own tapered nymphing leaders tied with Hi Vis (Gold and Green) mono from Stren. I taper them down to 7.5 to 8 feet long leaving a loop at the point for tying on my tippet. As the water depth varies so does the tippet size. I go from 24 inches to as long as 48 inches. These leaders are great for any type of tight line nymphing.

These suggestions all seem a bit short to me.

I always start with a 9' leader and then add at least a foot of flouro to the first fly and between each additional fly. I understand wanting to have direct contact, but if I'm high sticking, I want to be able to have my rod above the water as high as possible for wary fish. This does lead to the possibility of having slack or bows in the leader and not have direct contact, but if I'm fishing that close I can usually go off a visual strike instead of needing to feel the fish. Of course I usually will high stick for a section of a river or run, then go back to normal casting and change it up.
