An unexpected gift

Postby theophilus » September 13th, 2009, 12:30 pm

Moments of clear thought can be triggered by the smallest details, events that seem unremarkable, or perhaps set in place just for us at exactly the right time. Let me explain.....
My life abruptly changed last fall. A routine physical exam for my wife resulted in a diagnosis of stage 4 melanoma, and a grim prognosis.(Please read and consider Papasequoia's early post regarding skin cancer).Things and activities, such as flyfishing and monetary goals, faded to insignificance in light of my precious Susie and her struggle. 9 months of chemotherapy, a gradual erosion of vitality, our world has become focused on simply maintaining enough strength and composure to cope with each day's schedule. I had no idea that she possessed such fortitude- I really question whether my endurance and faith could match the challenge as well as she has, after 38 years of marriage she surprises me...
Yesterday over morning coffe, looking over the day's agenda, I saw a bug on the patio slider. I got up to swat it, and recognized the tell-tale upright wings. A Callibaetis spinner!!

I don't think I can really explain how affected I was by this little bug. It must have been blown by the afternoon westerlies from a nearby golf course pond. Its symmetry and delicate beauty, its short life...well, without being overly dramatic, let me just say that I am encouraged. i accept it as a gift, a reminder that

"He is close to the broken hearted,
And saves those who are crushed in spirit"

I coaxed the bug onto a finger, took it outside, and a puff of breath sent it on...

Sorry to hear the news, Doug. Sending some positive thoughts your way. Your .sig file quote seems especially apt in light of your post. Good luck to you both.

My thoughts and prayers are with both of you Doug. I can imagine your feelings and can certainly understand why fishing and other endevours would take a distant back seat to what's important at this time.

You will find that those gifts will come when you least expect them and need them the most. Savor them.

Doug, you are always finding ways to inspire me to look a little deeper into the seemingly ordinary.

There is not a day that goes by without thoughts of you and Susie.

The prayers are in Hyper Drive!
God Bless

An update on Susie-

We received with grateful hearts an encouraging evaluation of the most current scan. She has responded in a remarkable fashion to the new chemo, with, at long last, a hope for a future. I want to be gaurded in my optimism, but it looks REALLY GOOD!!!!

I am a private person, and thought long about sharing her situation on this forum, but felt it was just the right thing to do. The quality of your responses has shown that it was indeed right.

My thanks and gratitude to you all,

Doug and Susie

You'll both continue to be in my thoughts. Great news indeed! Wish her my best.
