Hybrid trout

Postby Rockstar Fisherman » November 4th, 2008, 1:58 am

I as many other come across many trout that appear to be hybridized. So instead of googleing hybrid trout I thought I'd simply ask what all kinds of hybrids there are. I know for sure I've come across Golden/bows, and Cutt/bows, but what other trout species hybridize in NATURE. Tiger trout (Brown/Brook) do not, so they don't count. Any and all info would be interesting to read about. Do Browns hybridize with anyone, do brooks? Of course rainbows, goldens and cutthroats do but what about the others? And why? I know the "why" might be asking a lot but this is all out of curiosity.

I think any trout that spawns at the same time will hybrid with others. Its a matter of the eggs being laid and the sperm being carried downstream. Hatcheries worry about this. It would be cool to see pics of cool/wierd looking hybrids on this post.

When its time to get your spawn on....I don't think the trout are picky

Actually Mike, though rare, the tiger trout do occur in naturally in a few places in nature. Obviously this is due browns having been introduced, but the cross does happen.

I will try to dig up the articles I read a couple months ago. :ugeek:

Cutt - Bow
Gold - Bow (Actually not a hybrid, because its the same species)
Arctic Char/Brookie (supposedly this is indistinguishable from a Large male brookie)
Lake Trout/Brookie
Lake trout/Arctic Char
Chinook/Pink Salmon
Brown/Atlantic Salmon

These are the ones I am aware of happening in the wild, at least occasionally. Tiger trout (Brown/Brookie) do happen occasionally in the wild.

Not all trout/salmon are close enough to successfully interbreed. There are chromasomal differences that make many hybrids Sterile or not at all possible.
Fishing is the most wonderful thing I do in my life, barring some equally delightful unmentionables.

Wow, thanks for the info so far, last I read the tiger trout only occured through hatcheries making it happen. Keep the info coming.

Here are a couple articles:

Not scientific, but I do know that the cross should be possible in the wild, just unlikely. Very pretty fish with a lot of variation in coloration/markings.

A couple of examples:

They remind me of damascus steel - the appearance of watered silk.

I was just going to post that <g> ... The tigers are predominantly in Utah are stockers. From everything I have read naturally occurring tigers are fairly uncommon. Ether way a beautiful fish!

An example of damascus steel the Tigers remind me of:

Cool articles on the Tiger trout, thanks Darrin.

Now what about Brown/Rainbow, or Ranbow/Brook hybrids. There are strains that do spawn at the same times yet I've never heard of these species hybridizing.

Do they? If not why? I know I'm picking some brains but I'm just curious.

There seems to be none of these. Likely largely due to a lack of compatibility from a genetic/chromosome standpoint. (They're not closely enough related genetically)
