Knot Video--Davy Knot

I ran another quick test.....yes, I'm bored.

I carefully tied a Double Davy on one hook, and a standard 7 turn clinch on another hook. Same P-Line Floroclear 12lb. Anchored the Double Davy and pulled to failure. The Double Davy failed, BUT this time I had to pull much harder to break the knot. The line showed stress from the pull, so I changed to a new piece and started over. I anchored the clinch knot hook and the clinch failed. I didn't have to pull as hard to break the knot, and I didn't feel like I seated the clinch correctly. I retied the same knots on new line and did one more test. This time I took extra care to tie both knots as well as I could. Again, the Double Davy failed, but I had to pull very hard to break the knot. MUCH harder than I had to to break the standard Davy.

As I guessed, the extra turn on the Double Davy made the knot much stronger in this P-Line, fluorocarbon line.

You need to get out and fish. You obviously have way too much time on your hands--but I do find your research interesting.

I like the davy/double davy because they are so easy to tie, and that's important to me.

I like the Davy for small flies and fine tippets. The hackle plier trick is neat, but I doubt I'll use it. Just one more thing dangling from my body and waiting to tangle.

I gotta say though, for larger flies and heavier leaders, especially wets and streamers, I prefer another knot to the Double Davy. It's a spillover from my saltwater fishing, both fly and conventional. I've long used a Uni Knot in those realms, conventionally tied with 5 turns. Makes a pretty bulky knot, but has the advantage of letting you fish it "open" like other loops for more fly action.

Didn't like the bulk, so got to experimenting with how few turns I could get away with. Only two turns is easily as strong as the DD or Improved Clinch, and maybe stronger. Just never got around to running a comparison.

One thing I gotta say in favor of the Uni, whether 2 turns or 5, it's sure a lot easier for old fumblefingers, especially when they're cold. I can also tie it by feel in black darkness such as when we're fishing stripers.
