I can't see where the extra 6" makes too much difference. Might help mend a little more line, and it probably casts a little different, but I have fished both and don't see a huge difference between the two. I have a 7'9" 3wt and 9' 3wt and there is a huge difference there.

My old 5WT (the one given to me by my late father-in-law) is 8' 6" so I am guessing that she just got the new one in the same size. As far as the difference between 9' and 8' 6" there is not much.
