March Fish & Picture of the Month

Postby Papasequoia » March 20th, 2009, 8:29 am

It looks like a thread hasn't been started yet for March? So, I guess I'll start one with my submissions. The first one is for fish of the month. It's far from being the biggest fish I caught on any trip so far in March, but I think it best captures the feeling of a fishing trip to this area and the beauty of the surroundings.

For picture of the month I'm going to toss this one out there. Composition-wise it may not be the best, and it would have been nicer if it had been more of a close-up, but how often do you catch a fish coming completely out of the water to snag a caddisfly during a hatch? In this pic you can see at least two other rises and some of the caddis flying around. I snapped this picture during a period of insane feeding where the fish were rising with huge, splashy takes all around me. It was hard to hold the camera steady without shaking and it quickly went back in my pocket so I could fish some more. I never did get that particular fish as he was protected from a drift by a part of a submerged tree that is sticking up out of the water between me and him. But I got a lot of his friends! :D Jon

I caught a fish in March so I might as well enter it (in the hopes that Randy is the guest judge of the month for March ;) ;) ;) )

Last month I was chastised by Papa S for being too quick in making my selection because he procrastinated and did not get his entry in on time . Consequently he didn’t even get an honorable mention. :gun:
This month I waited a couple of days and made my picks for fish of the month I’m selecting the Bluegill submitted by Fly Bob. I selected it because it’s a great example of a Gill and not a fish that gets a lot of attention from us long rodders. Here again is the Fish of the Month for March: Image

For picture of the month the choice was a little more challenging a tough choice between Mrs. Fly Bob’s picture which I found very artistic and interesting and the one submitted by Shane who is currently drinking beer in NZ as I write this post.

As this is a forum dedicated to fly fishing I chose Shane’s picture for picture of the month of March. Here it is again. Image[/quote]

Congratulations to both. Oh and as you can see Papa S still didn’t get an honorable mention. :D :D :D

Congrats to Bob and Shane! Two great shots and nice fish too!
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.
